Short answer: gold plated jewelry is water-resistant, not waterproof. A splash or a rainy walk is harmless, but prolonged contact with chlorinated pool water, seawater, hot water or soap wears the plating down.

Why water-resistant is not waterproof

Gold plating is a very thin layer of gold alloy bonded over a base metal, usually brass. Our own standard for 18K gold plating is 0.1 to 0.3 micron over brass, a house specification rather than an industry-wide one, and custom plating is available on request. Because that layer is measured in microns, the question is not whether water can touch it, but how much water, how often, and what else is in the water.

Pure water is not aggressive on its own. Damage comes from its companions: chlorine and salt from pools and the sea, heat from showers and hot tubs, and soap or shampoo. These loosen the plating at its edges and speed up tarnish on the brass beneath, while daily friction from towels and clothing polishes away the weakened surface.

Habits that keep the plating intact

• Put jewelry on last and take it off first; perfume and lotion damage plating just as much as water.
• Wipe with a soft dry cloth after water contact instead of letting pieces air-dry.
• Store items dry and separate so chains and clasps cannot rub together.
• Skip ultrasonic cleaners and abrasive polishes; they attack a micron-level layer.
• Expect normal wear: plating is a finish, and every finish ages.
