What Base Metals Are Used in Gold Plated Jewelry?
Gold plated jewelry is made by depositing a thin layer of gold, most often 18K, onto a non-precious base metal through electroplating. The base metal carries the structure and weight; the gold layer delivers the color and finish. At Hengdian (HD) Jewelry, our 18K gold plated fashion pieces use a brass base finished to our own 0.1-0.3 micron plating standard.
The Most Common Base Metals
Brass
An alloy of copper and zinc. Cost-effective, plates evenly, and the base we use across our wholesale fashion catalog.
Copper
Warm reddish tone with excellent plating conductivity, used alone or as a base layer beneath gold.
Stainless Steel
Hard and corrosion resistant, favored for bolder or everyday styles that need extra strength.
Sterling Silver
Used when gold plating is applied over silver, the definition of gold vermeil, a thicker precious-metal base.
Why the Base Metal Matters
The base metal drives price, weight, durability, and skin compatibility. Brass keeps our pieces lightweight and affordable while holding a smooth, even 18K gold finish across 40,000 plus in-stock designs. Stainless steel adds strength for larger shapes, while silver bases unlock premium vermeil finishes.
Our Standard at Hengdian (HD) Jewelry
We plate 18K gold over a brass base to our own standard of 0.1-0.3 micron plating thickness. This is our in-house specification, not an industry-wide rule, and we can adjust plating thickness on request for custom orders. Our pieces are lead-free; nickel is a controlled addition whose release stays within REACH limits. We do not claim the jewelry is nickel-free.
Produced in our own factory in Shanwei, Guangdong, with 1V1 service and 500 plus new designs added every month.
