What Causes Gold Plating to Wear Off?
Gold plated jewelry wears off when the thin outer gold layer is removed, exposing the brass. This differs from fading and blackening (tone and oxidation). Knowing what erodes the plating sets realistic buyer expectations.
Mechanical Friction
The most common cause. Daily rubbing against skin, clothing, and surfaces wears the plating at contact points: inside ring bands, behind posts, near clasps. A thinner layer wears faster.
Chemical & Skin Factors
Perfume, lotion, chlorine, and acidic sweat break the plating down. Wear differs between wearers because skin pH varies. Remove pieces before swimming, exercising, or applying cosmetics.
The Role of Plating Thickness
Thickness drives wear life. Our own standard 18K gold plating over polished brass is 0.1 to 0.3 micron, checked across five lines at our Haifeng factory in Shanwei, Guangdong, with a second check at our Guangzhou warehouse. This is our own standard, not an industry figure. Custom thickness is available on request via our contact page.
How We Control Quality
At our Haifeng factory in Shanwei, we run five production lines, then a second check at our Guangzhou warehouse. Pieces are lead-free with controlled nickel release within REACH limits, backed by SGS, REACH, CE, and Gold Product Integrity Enterprise.
How to Slow Wear
Wipe with a soft cloth, store dry, away from chemicals. Rotate styles instead of wearing one daily. Our 40,000+ ready-stock designs (500+ new monthly) at our product list ease rotation: 6 to 12 pieces per style, 36 for HAI-coded items, 120 for custom 18K gold plated orders.

- Is wear-off the same as fading? Not exactly. Fading softens the gold tone as the layer thins; wear-off is the layer removed at friction points, exposing brass.
- Does thicker plating last longer? Yes. A thicker layer delays exposure of the base metal; custom thickness is available on request.
- Can worn plating be restored? A local jeweler can re-plate exposed areas; rotation and care come first.
