Quality 18K gold plated jewelry does not have to look cheap. The premium-or-cheap read comes from plating thickness, base prep, color calibration and finishing control.
What Makes 18K Gold Plated Jewelry Look Premium
- Plating thickness. A controlled 0.1-0.3 micron 18K layer reads warmer than thin flash plating.
- Base metal. Polished brass gives a smoother, more uniform surface under the plating.
- Color calibration. A calibrated 18K bath avoids orange or brassy tints.
- Hand polishing. Mirror polish before plating removes roughness that catches light.
Warning Signs of "Cheap-Looking" Plating
- Uneven or blotchy tone across the piece.
- Brass showing through edges or high-contact areas.
